Description

A RARE GOLD REPOUSSé PLAQUE OF AVALOKITESHVARA, ANCIENT REGION OF GANDHARA, 1ST-4TH CENTURY

Kushan Empire. Constructed of a finely hammered gold, the pointed plaque depicting the Bodhisattva of Compassion seated in dhyanasana, with both hands resting in dhyana mudra on the lap, clad in a voluminous robe with folds gathering over his legs, and his neck richly bejeweled. His face, serene in expression, marked by heavy-lidded eyes, a broad nose, and full lips framed by a distinctive mustache, with a turban tied above the forehead from which emerge his curled locks of hair.

Provenance: Collection of Paolo Bertuzzi, and thence by descent. Paolo Bertuzzi (1943-2022) was a fashion stylist from Bologna, Italy. He was the son of Enrichetta Bertuzzi, founder of Hettabretz, a noted Italian fashion company with customers such as the Rothschild family, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor. Paolo Bertuzzi later took over his mother’s business and designed exclusive pieces, some of which were exhibited in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA. He was also an avid collector of antiques for more than sixty years. His collection includes both archaic and contemporary art, and he edited two important books about Asian art, Goa Made - An Archaeological Discovery, about a large-scale archaeological project carried out with the Italian and Indonesian governments, and Majapahit, Masterpieces from a Forgotten Kingdom.
Condition: Good condition with old wear, manufacturing irregularities, and expected signs of burial. An obvious loss to the upper tip of the plaque. Light warping. Few minor nicks, light surface scratches, and occasional minor dents.

Weight: 14.1 g
Dimensions: Height 8.2 cm
Gold: circa 14-16 carats

While Gandhara flourished as a cultural crossroads between India, Central Asia, and the Hellenistic world from the 1st century BC to the 5th century AD, most surviving artifacts are in stone, terracotta, or bronze. Gold decorative artworks from ancient Gandhara are exceptionally rare, since intrinsic value of gold made it highly coveted, leading to its frequent melting and reuse over centuries.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related gold repoussé plaque with a standing female figure, from a stupa at Lauriya Nandangarth, north India, c. 3rd-2nd century BC, 3.3 cm high, in the Indian Museum of Kolkata, accession number A19746.
