Description

A RARE BRONZE FIGURE OF THE STANDING BUDDHA, ANCIENT REGION OF GANDHARA, CIRCA 3RD–5TH CENTURY

Expert’s note: Based on the hairstyle, with its tightly coiled curls and distinct ushnisha, the present example can be dated firmly between the 3th-5th century of Gandharan bronze sculpture, comparable to the standing Buddha in the Musée Guimet, Paris, and another example sold at Gorny & Mosch, lot 584 (see auction result comparison below). Later examples tend to display the more stylized wavy hair characteristic of 5th–6th century production. The pedestal, by contrast, possibly represents a later embellishment, probably originating from the Swat valley and added during the 6th or 7th century.

Finely cast, standing on a square openwork base sculpted at the front with a small frieze depicting a seated bodhisattva flanked by plinths. The Buddha is dressed in a loose robe cascading in voluminous folds, his right arm raised in Abhaya mudra and his left lowered, the serene face, with downcast eyes centered by an urna, a broad nose, and full lips forming a subtle smile, flanked by elongated ears and surmounted by hair rendered in dotted locks and tied above the ushnisha.

Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
Condition: Overall fair condition with expected wear, commensurate with age. Tiny nicks, small dents, expected signs of wear, deep corrosion and weathering, and obvious losses. A thick, naturally grown, dark patina and malachite encrustations.

Weight: 653 g
Dimensions: Length 23.2 cm
