The present carving depicts the famous scene from Greek mythology recounting the abduction of the Phoenician princess Europa, who was a native of Tyre and later became the mother of King Minos of Crete. According to the myth, Zeus transformed himself into a gentle white bull and mingled with the herds belonging to the father of Europa. While Europa and her attendants gathered flowers, she noticed the bull, caressed its flanks, and eventually climbed onto its back. Seizing the opportunity, Zeus carried her across the sea to the island of Crete, where he revealed his true identity. Europa then became the first queen of Crete.
