Tao Yiqing (1914-1986) was born in Beijing, where he graduated from the Jinghua Art School in 1934 and went on to teach at art schools, teachers’ colleges, and universities in Beijing, Kaifeng, Rehe (Chengde), and other cities. By the 1930s and early 1940s he was exhibiting widely in Beijing and Tianjin, establishing his reputation early. In the 1950s he traveled through Northwest China, and in 1956 joined a Ministry of Culture expedition to retrace the route of the Long March, producing landscapes that blended historical resonance with lyrical atmosphere. His standing was confirmed in 1961 with his appointment as professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and as a member of the Chinese Artists Association. Celebrated as a master of landscape painting, Tao developed a distinctive style of misty mountains, layered ink and mineral pigment washes, and a dynamic balance between monumental rock formations and flowing water, often punctuated by boats, villages, or pine groves to harmonize human presence with sweeping vistas. This fusion of classical brushwork and modern sensitivity secured him a place among the foremost painters of twentieth-century China, with works now in the collections of the British Museum in London, the National Art Museum of China in Beijing, and the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
