Description

‘PARROT AND PRUNUS’, BY SUN YOU, DATED 1738

China. Ink and watercolors on silk. Painted in delicate brushstrokes to depict a white parrot perched on a blossoming branch of prunus issuing from rockwork.

Expert’s Note: White parrots (bai yingwu) held a special place in Chinese culture from the Tang dynasty onward, admired for their rarity and striking appearance. Native populations of white cockatoos existed on Hainan island, while additional birds reached China through maritime trade from Southeast Asia and beyond. Frequently presented as tribute to emperors, they became potent symbols of auspiciousness and refinement, often depicted in painting and poetry as embodiments of elegance. Their presence in Chinese art reflects the wider networks of exchange that enriched the Imperial court.

Inscriptions: Upper right, signed ‘Sun You’, and dated, ‘26th day, 3rd month, wuwu year [1738]’. Two seals.

Provenance: Dutch trade. The back with a label from ‘Gerbrands Kunsthandel. Oudkerkhof 46. Utrecht’. Gerbrand’s Kunsthandel, located at Oudkerkhof 46 in Utrecht, operated from before 1916 until after 1940. The gallery became known as an active venue for solo and group exhibitions, showcasing artists such as J.A. Zandleven and Jan Meine Jansen. Archival photographs and exhibition ephemera attest to its role as a significant hub of the Utrecht art scene, and its label appears on the backs of several artworks, marking its importance in provenance research.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, little soiling, light creasing, and a small repair to the lower right corner.

Dimensions: Image size 116 x 47 cm, Size incl. frame 122.2 x 53.7 cm

With a gilt-lacquered wood frame. (2)

Sun You (孙佑), a Qing-dynasty court painter from Jiangsu and follower of the Loudong School, was active in the early Qianlong reign. In 1736, he helped create the court version of Along the River During the Qingming Festival; in 1738, he contributed to the Tao Ye Album illustrating porcelain production; and in 1741, he worked with Zhou Kun and Ding Guanpeng on Han Palace Spring Dawn. Archival records also place him within the imperial painting teams that included the Jesuit artist Giuseppe Castiglione (Lang Shining), participating in large-scale palace projects that blended Western perspective and shading with Chinese brushwork. Though specific joint works with Castiglione are not documented, Sun You’s career reflects the collaborative environment that defined Qianlong’s ambitious court art.
