Rajasthan or Gujarat. Seated in padmasana on a cushioned throne, the figure clad simply in a loincloth, his hands folded in dhyana mudra, his chest marked with a srivatsa. His face with downcast eyes and neatly incised pupils below arched brows, above gently pursed lips forming a calm smile, flanked by elongated earlobes, the hair arranged in tight curls and surmounted by a cranial protrusion.

Inscriptions: To the frontside of the throne, inscribed in a neatly incised two-line script.

Provenance: Collection of Yvette Starck, Luxembourg, acquired in 1975, and thence by descent to Jacques Grosbusch, Luxembourg. A copy of an invoice, dated to April 25th, 1975, addressed to Dr. René Schroeder (the husband of Yvette Starck), accompanies the lot. Note that in this invoice, the present lot is dated as 12th century.
Condition: Very good condition with wear. Nicks, scratches, small losses, signs of weathering and erosion, surface corrosion, and encrustations. The stone with a good polish, resulting in a smooth unctuous feel overall.

Weight: 59.3 kg
Dimensions: Height 58 cm

The nudity of Jain saints was a practice of both asceticism and their belief in non-possession, dating back to the days of Mahavira. However, a schism arose in around 79 AD, extensively recorded in literature, about what constitutes total renunciation. At the time, Jain monks separated into rival factions, the Digambaras (‘clothed with the sky’), who were nude, and the Svetambaras (‘clothed with white’), who wore white cloths. According to inscriptions, the Svetambaras worshipped the nude image without objection and for both sects the Jinas and the saint Bahubali are represented naked while all other deities are clothed and even ornamented.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related figure of a Jain tirthankara from Jaipur, Rajasthan, 14.7 cm high, dated 18th century, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number IM.346-1924.
