Description

A ROMAN GOLD AND CARNELIAN AGATE ‘CASTOR’ BRACELET, 3RD-4TH CENTURY

The outer edge of the bezel with a fringe of beaded geometric design, hinged to the wider bracelet decorated with chased foliate lobes, the flat oval stone engraved with the nude Castor balancing on one foot and holding a spear, a star above his head.

Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
Condition: Very good condition with wear and manufacturing flaws, small dings, and some warping.
