Description

AN IZNIK POLYCHROME POTTERY DISH, OTTOMAN EMPIRE, TURKEY, CIRCA 1600

Expert’s note: The gently swaying flowers on this dish reflect the naturalistic style introduced by Kara Memi, chief painter at the Ottoman court in the later 16th century. He favored floral arrangements often described as “blowing in the wind” for their graceful sense of flow and movement. For a discussion of Kara Memi and his influence on Iznik designs, see Nurhan Atasoy and Julian Raby, Iznik. The Pottery of Ottoman Turkey, 1989, chapter XIX, pp. 222–223.

Finely potted with shallow rounded sides supported on a short foot with a recessed base and rising to a broad sloping rim. Vividly painted to the interior in shades of cobalt-blue, emerald-green, and bole-red with dark olive-green outlines beneath a clear glaze with an asymmetrical floral spray composed of tulips, carnations, and lavender issuing from a leafy tuft, encircled within a double-line band, the rim with a stylized wave and rock pattern. The exterior with alternating cloud and scroll designs.

Provenance: Collection of B. Luthy, Geneva, acquired in the local trade in the 1960s-1970s, and thence by descent in the family.
Condition: Overall condition commensurate with age, showing expected wear and firing irregularities. Minor flaking to the enamels, fritting and small chips along the rim, and a few short hairlines. A section of the dish (ca. 15 × 10 cm) shows touchups, possibly to conceal an old crack. The foot has been pierced for wall mounting.

Weight: 786.2 g
Dimensions: Diameter 29 cm

Iznik ware is named after the town of Iznik in Anatolia where it was produced from the late fifteenth century until the end of the seventeenth century. The Ottoman court created these ceramics inspired by the prestige and symbolic value of Chinese porcelain, rather than its decorative motifs. The decoration represented a distinct Ottoman adaptation of the International Timurid style, moving from delicate forms of the prototype to a more controlled and dynamic composition, with a strong sense of three-dimensionality. The production process was unique on its own, differing from contemporary Iranian pottery and Ottoman architectural tilework, and was attributed to the innovation of Anatolian craftsmen.

Previously known for simple earthenware decorated under the glaze, Iznik began producing refined fritware vessels painted with cobalt blue under a transparent lead glaze at the end of the fifteenth century. This development was encouraged by the Ottoman court in Istanbul, which highly valued Chinese blue-and-white porcelain. The result was a combination of technical mastery and aesthetic sophistication that defined early Iznik ware.

Decoration evolved toward a freer and more flowing style with the addition of new colors during the sixteenth century. Turquoise complemented cobalt blue, followed by shades of pine green and pale purple. Mid-century, craftsmen produced large quantities of underglazed tiles for imperial buildings, introducing bright bole red and emerald green. By the end of the century, the quality of Iznik pottery declined. As court patronage diminished, designs and execution became less refined, and these ceramics, once reserved for the court, gradually entered everyday domestic use.
