Description

A SILVER HORSE BIT CHEEK PIECE IN THE FORM OF A CHARIOT, LURISTAN, CIRCA 10TH-7TH CENTURY BC

Boldly cast to depict a rider mounted on a simple chariot drawn by a beast with a large open beak. The charioteer grasping the reins firmly with both hands, wearing only a short loincloth that leaves his torso exposed. His stylized facial features, shown in profile, marked by a bulging eye, a prominent chin, and a pronounced ear.

Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
Condition: Fair condition, commensurate with age, with ancient wear and casting irregularities. Small losses and evidence of breakage. Deep corrosion in some areas. Light warping with occasional small dents. The silver surface with expected tarnishing and some areas of soil encrustation, indicating a prolonged period of burial.

Weight: 44.9 g
Dimensions: Length 8.3 cm
