Description

? A GROUP OF FOUR ANCIENT GLASS AND SILVER HEADS

Central Asia, regions of present-day Afghanistan and Pakistan, possibly 10th–12th century, or even significanty earlier. The group comprising four glass heads: two modeled with faces inlaid in silver, with thick black curly hair, and colorful adornments; the third in ruby red depicting the face of Buddha; and the fourth modeled in dark blue glass detailed with pale white eyes and black pupils. The first three pierced with apertures for suspension as pendants.

Provenance: The private collection of Michael Phillips, acquired in Afghanistan over 20 years ago. Michael Phillips (born 1943) is an Academy Award-winning film producer. Born in Brooklyn, New York, his parents were Lawrence and Shirley Phillips, noted New York dealers in Asian fine arts, selling to the Met, the LACMA, the Chicago Art Institute, and the British Museum among others. Michael Phillips is a collector of Asian art himself, particularly Indian, Southeast Asian, and Himalayan sculpture. His most important films include The Sting (winning the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1973), Taxi Driver (winning the Palme d’Or at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival), and Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Old wear, manufacturing irregularities, age cracks and fissures, small chips, some flaking, old repairs and touchups, and traces of use.

Weight: 33.3—78.2 g (incl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 4.8—5.8 g (incl. stand)

Each mounted on an associated stand. (8)

Expert’s note: Acquired by Michael Phillips over twenty years ago from Afghanistan, this intriguing group represents a remarkable and little-understood tradition of ancient glasswork. The technique by which the silver faces were fused or inlaid onto glass remains a marvel of craftsmanship, with no clear parallels. The group—comprising four heads, two with silver-inlaid visages, one rendered in translucent ruby red glass depicting the Buddha, and one in deep cobalt blue with finely detailed white and black eyes—demonstrates both technical sophistication and aesthetic refinement. Although a definitive cultural or chronological attribution is difficult to establish, close examination confirms that these examples are ancient, exhibiting mineral accretions, weathering, and traces of wear consistent with prolonged burial and ancient manufacture rather than recent production.

Literature Comparison: For related glass heads see, a Carthaginian red glass head pendant, c. 4th-1st century BC, 2 cm high, at Christie’s London, 2 May 2013, lot 6; another Carthaginian pendant, c. 5th-4th century BC, 3.5 cm high, at Christie’s New York, 3 June 1999, lot 27; an Eastern Mediterranean glass head pendant, c. 6th-3rd century BC, 2.3 cm high, at Christie’s, Live Auction 9020, Antiquities, lot 268; and a Roman cobalt blue glass Medusa head flask, at Christie’s London, 6 July 2016, lot 270.
