Description

A MINIATURE PAINTING OF A RECLINING SAFAVID NOBLEMAN, IRAN, 17TH TO 18TH CENTURY

Opaque pigments, ink, and gilt on paper. Finely painted to depict a richly attired Safavid nobleman reclining comfortably in a contemplative pose, holding his libation cup in his right hand. The courtly scene flanked above and below by two shaped cartouches bearing poetic inscriptions in Nasta’liq script on a gilded ground, set within a rectangular frame of deep blue adorned with delicate scrolling tendrils. The panel overall illuminated by a large golden sun, accented with blue and red details, against a speckled background highlighted with further touches of gold.

Inscriptions: Above, ‘Behold this array of adornments, raised to such a pinnacle— / it bears the splendor long celebrated in Iran.’ Below, ‘What can Rakhsh, the mighty steed, achieve before such beauty that rules the world? / Its power is evident—here it has found its perfect expression.’

Provenance: Swiss trade. Acquired from an estate on Lake Geneva.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, light soiling, and little rubbing to pigments and gilt.

Dimensions: Image size 14.7 x 9 cm, Folio size 24.6 x 16.7 cm, Size incl. frame 31.7 x 24.1 cm

Mounted and framed behind glass. (2)

This composition, evoking the lyrical style associated with the celebrated sixteenth-century painter Aqa Mirak, embodies Persian ideals of beauty and sophistication. The reclining nobleman, attired in sumptuous garments, conducts himself with elegant ease even in solitary repose, accompanied by poetic inscriptions above and below that establish a literary counterpoint to his refinement. The lower inscription, in particular, invokes Rakhsh, the legendary steed of Rostam from Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, a symbol of unrivaled strength, here reframed to underscore the interplay between heroic tradition and the cultured ideals of courtly life.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related earlier miniature painting of a reclining prince, attributed to Aqa Mirak, dated c. 1530, in the National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian Institution, accession number S1986.300.

Auction result comparison:

Description: Nasta’liq calligraphy and a Safavid prince smelling a flower, Iran, late 16th to early 17th century
