(2)The Later Han dynasty (947-951) was a short-lived regime during the turbulent Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period in Chinese history. It was founded by Liu Zhiyuan (895-948), a former military governor under the Later Jin, who declared himself emperor in 947. Although the dynasty was established that year, the official reign title, Qianyou, was not proclaimed until early 948, shortly before Liu Zhiyuan's death. His teenage son Liu Chengyou (931-951) succeeded him as Emperor Yin and continued the Qianyou era name until the fall of the dynasty in 951.This bronze votive object bears an inscription dated to the second year of the Qianyou era, which corresponds to 949, firmly placing it within the reign of Liu Chengyou. That the inscription also records the name of the donor and the year of its commission makes this a particularly rare and significant survival from a period of deep political instability and rapid dynastic change. Furthermore, such inscriptions are extremely rare among small bronzes of the period. A similar inscription reading 'Disciple Ren Ci respectfully made a sculpture of Guan ShiYin as an offering to the altar for eternal life' can be found on the base of a larger gilt-bronze figure of Avalokiteshvara, 17 cm high, dated to the Sui dynasty, at Christie's New York, 26 March 2010, lot 1299.Although few records survive from the Later Han, Buddhism is known to have remained an important part of religious life during the period. Votive bronzes such as this one were likely used in personal or temple devotion, and their portability may have contributed to their popularity. The scarcity of surviving examples from this brief dynasty makes this piece especially valuable as a rare material witness to Buddhist practice in tenth-century China.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's Hong Kong, 30 November 2020, lot 3006 Price: HKD 187,500 or approx.
