拍品描述
1573-1621)China, early 17th century. Finely carved and incised, the cylindrical body supported on three short bracket feet, the exterior cleverly combining high and low reliefs, to depict three scholars engaged in a deep discussion over the rising sun subtly carved below the rim, accompanied by two attendants, one peering mischievously from behind a tree trunk, all set within a mountainous landscape dotted with pine, wutong trees, and rockwork.Inscriptions: Incised to a tree trunk in seal script, 'Zhu Sansong zhi' ('made by Zhu Sansong').Provenance: From the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Gerard Hawthorn, London, United Kingdom. Gerard Hawthorn joined Sydney L. Moss Ltd in 1963 and later became an independent art dealer, assisting the world's leading collectors and museums in acquiring rare Chinese antiques. Additionally, he formed his own collection of Chinese art, especially Yixing stoneware, which before their sale in November 2011 was regarded as one of the world's greatest and most distinguished collection of Yixing wares by a single owner. Gerard Hawthorn is also the author of the catalog series 'Oriental Works of Art', which features fine works of art from China, Japan, and Korea.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and natural imperfections including expected age cracks. Few tiny nicks and light surface scratches. The wood with a beautiful patina, naturally grown into a fine golden-brown hue. The bitong with an unctuous feel and elegant shine overall.Weight: 397.6 gDimensions: Height 15.8 cmZhu Sansong (active ca. 1573-1619) was a prominent bamboo carver from Jiading, in Jiangsu province, who was active during the late Ming dynasty. He came from a distinguished lineage of bamboo artisans, whose skills and techniques had already achieved exceptional sophistication. Alongside his grandfather, Zhu He, and his father, Zhu Ying, Zhu Sansong was recognized as one of the renowned Three Zhus of Jiading — a trio of master craftsmen credited with establishing Jiading as a major hub for bamboo carving in China. Zhu's artistry was widely admired, and his pieces remain highly valued for their intricate detail and refined execution. Known to carve mostly for personal satisfaction, he often worked at his own pace and had a particular appreciation for landscape scenes. One notable historical record mentions a bamboo carving depicting Laozi riding a blue ox, bearing Zhu Sansong's signature, which was presented to the Kangxi Emperor during his sixtieth birthday celebration. This presentation is documented in Wanshou shengdian chuji (萬壽盛典初集), volume 56, highlighting Zhu's recognition within Imperial circles and reinforcing his reputation as a leading figure in his field. The scholarly scene depicted by this brush pot can be interpreted as a gentleman gesturing toward the sun, with daylight evoked by the pale background. The phrase 'pointing at the sun' (zhi ri) serves as a pun associated with the wish for an advancing career, symbolizing daily progress — specifically, the auspicious blessing 'zhiri gaosheng', meaning 'may you rise in rank with each passing day'. This motif of upward mobility and success is a common theme in traditional Chinese art, linking the figure's gesture to aspirations for prosperity and achievement. As such, the piece not only embodies scholarly ideals but also conveys a broader message of hope for personal growth and accomplishment.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related bamboo brush holder by Zhu Sansong, carved with a woman reading a letter, in the Palace Museum, Taipei, accession number 故雕000013N000000000.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's Hong Kong, 1 June 2011, lot 3865 Price: HKD 800,000 or approx.
