拍品描述
A BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA MUCHALINDA, ANGKOR PERIOD, BAYON STYLEKhmer Empire, 12th-13th century. Powerfully cast, seated in dhyanasana on the scaled coils of Muchalinda, his hands lowered in dhyanamudra, richly adorned with jewelry. The face with downcast eyes in a benevolent expression, flanked by elongated lobes with pendant earrings. The hair pulled into a conical chignon and secured with a wide tiara, beneath the well-detailed seven-headed naga hood, their bodies decorated with sun wheels.Provenance: The collection of Gérard Wahl-dit-Boyer, Paris, acquired between 1970-2000 and thence by descent to his wife Madame Claudine Perrot. A copy of a provenance statement written and signed by Claudine Perrot, dated 20 November 2024, and confirming the above accompanies this lot. Gérard Wahl-dit-Boyer, affectionately known as 'Bébérose' (1944-2014), was a well-known French art dealer and collector based in Paris. Over several decades, he assembled a wide-ranging and eclectic collection, with a focus on African art—especially works from Gabon and the Congo. Wahl-dit-Boyer began traveling extensively in the 1970s, sourcing objects directly from local markets and dealers in regions such as South America, Southeast Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. He was a regular presence at French flea markets, fairs, and provincial auctions, and was well-known among colleagues and collectors for his broad network and tireless search for unusual or distinctive works.Condition: Good condition with wear and casting irregularities. Few small losses, scattered minute nicks, encrustations, and minor warping to the base. The bronze with a rich, naturally grown patina with vibrant malachite and cuprite encrustations.Weight: 2,455.5 g Dimensions: Height 29.2 cmJayavarman VII, the first Khmer king devoted to Buddhism who built the great royal temple at Banteay Chhmar, linked himself with the image of the Buddha seated on a serpent, or naga, as the divine form under which he would be honored. During his reign, the naga-enthroned Buddha became a ubiquitous image for veneration, often set up together with Lokeshvara, who was associated with his father, and Prajnaparamita, the form under which his deceased mother was honored. Lokeshvara is the powerful enlightened being of compassion, while Prajnaparmita is the goddess who personifies wisdom. King Jayavarman VII, therefore, presented himself as the enlightened Buddha, the product of the union of Compassion and Wisdom, supported and glorified by the naga, which refers to the Khmer people.Muchalinda is the name of a naga sheltering the Buddha from the elements after his enlightenment. When a storm raged and torrential rain fell for a whole week, the king of the nagas, Muchalinda, rose from the earth, coiling its body to form a seat and swelled its great hood to shelter Buddha. When the great storm had cleared, the serpent king assumed his human form, bowed before the Buddha, and returned to his palace. Seven-headed nagas are often depicted as guardian statues, carved as balustrades on causeways leading to main temples, such as those found in Angkor Wat.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related bronze of Buddha Muchalinda, dated to the second half of the 12th century, 20.3 cm high, in the Walters Art Museum, accession number 54.2730.
