Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Oxford Authentication on 30 July 2025, based on sample no. P125k4, sets the firing date of the sample taken between 600 and 1000 years ago, consistent with the dating of the present lot. A copy of the report accompanies the lot.Published & Exhibited: The National Museum of History, Good Fortune Throughout History: An Exhibition of Black Glaze and Porcelain from Tzu-chou and Ji-chou kilns, Taipei, 20 August-12 September 2004, cat. no. 33, p. 66.China, Jiangxi province, 13th to early 14th century. Well potted, the pear-shaped body supported on short splayed foot and surmounted by a subtly waisted neck with a rolled lip. The exterior finely decorated with reserves in the creamy-white biscuit against the dark-brown glaze to depict two vertically oriented plum branches in full bloom. The interior and foot ring left unglazed revealing the buff ware.Provenance: From a noted private collection in Taiwan.Condition: Good condition overall, with ancient wear and typical manufacturing irregularities, including light kiln grit and small firing cracks. A luting line is visible below the mouth, with associated minor glaze recess. Light surface scratches and old shallow chips to the foot. Minuscule glaze touchups to the reverse—original condition is documented in the publication referenced above. The base bears a small sampling hole with associated fill.Weight: 298.4 gDimensions: Height 17.3 cmThis vase was produced through a carefully articulated modeling and glazing process, exemplifying the distinctive technical hallmarks of Jizhou ware. Thrown on the wheel in separate sections and luted together after partial drying, the vessel was then fully assembled. Openwork stencils of cut paper were affixed to the exterior of the vase before immersion in a dark brown glaze. Once the glaze had stabilized, the stencils were removed to reveal the reserved designs, after which the stamens and pistils of the blossoms were painted with a slip-laden brush, and the 'sgraffiato' branch tips were incised through the glaze. Following another period of drying, the reserved motifs and their slip-painted details were covered with a thin coat of clear glaze, probably with a brush. The vase was fired right side up in its saggar.Chinese texts term bottles of this shape 'ping' (bottles), 'ha ping' (flower vases), or 'changing ping' (long-necked bottles), underscoring the uncertainty concerning their exact function. Undecorated but similarly shaped vessels frequently appear as flower vases in illustrations from Yuan and early Ming woodblock-printed books, indicating that many such vessels indeed served as vases for cut flowers. In illustrated secular dramas, such vases often appear in pairs on an altar, flanking a ding-shaped censer.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related Jizhou ware resist-decorated bottle vase with decoration of blossoming plum branches, China, Jiangxi province, Southern Song to Yuan dynasty, dated 13th-14th century, 20.2 cm high, in the Harvard Art Museums, object number 2003.108, and illustrated in Robert D.
