AN EXQUISITE TWO-COLOR CAMEO JASPER 'BUDDHIST LIONS AND MONKEYS' SNUFF BOTTLE, OFFICIAL SCHOOL, 1750-1860Published: Clare and Michael Chu, The Bentley Collection of Chinese Snuff Bottles, Hong Kong, 1908, p. 82.Superbly carved and well hollowed, of flattened rounded square form surmounted by a tubular neck with a flat lip and supported on an oval foot ring, carved in relief through the dark green outer layer on one side with a Buddhist lion and cub playing beside a brocade ball with tasseled ribbons, and the reverse cleverly integrating a thin darker inclusion that sweeps diagonally across the bottle to depict a pair of monkeys sitting on a subtly carved craggy rock, the lower situated simian stealthily hiding a succulent peach from the vigilant stare of his companion.Provenance: Sotheby's Billingshurst, 25 June 1991, lot 119, estimate GBP 2,500 or approx. EUR 8,900 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). The Bentley Collection, acquired from the above. Clare Chu, Asian Art Studio, Los Angeles, California. The Francine and Bernard Wald Collection of Fine Snuff Bottles, acquired from the above and thence by descent. Clare Chu has been active in the field of Chinese snuff bottles for 40 years as a gallery owner, curator, auction consultant, lecturer, and writer. She is the author of many articles, books, and snuff bottle catalogs, and has curated exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2016), and at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore (2018). In October 2021 she curated an exhibition of over 750 snuff bottles held at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall in Taipei. Francine and Bernard Wald were a devoted couple and passionate snuff bottle collectors, with a particular love for agate bottles—amassing a collection of over 1,400 pieces. Active participants in the early ICSBS conventions, they acquired many works from leading dealers such as Hugh Moss and Robert Hall, Clare Chu and the Late Robert Kleiner. Francine, a physicist and teacher, and Bernard, a senior lawyer in NYC, often spent summers in Cape Cod coinciding with the sales held at Eldred's auctions. Other collectors, the Dickers, the Dorfs, the Golders, and the Hartmans would visit and 'Fran and Bernie' as they were known colloquially, held a famed 'Spaghetti' party each year, with all the collectors present. Their prized agate bottles, especially those featuring monkeys—Bernie's zodiac animal—were proudly displayed in their Greenwich Village home. The couple also wrote articles for the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, a small hairline to the lion cub's body, the stone with natural fissures and inclusions.Stopper: Coral and JasperWeight: 91.4 gDimensions: Height including stopper 72 mm. Diameter neck 20 mm and mouth 8 mm.Jasper is a fascinating material with a wide range of possible colors, even in a single specimen.
