A PALE CELADON JADE ‘OX’ SEAL, YUAN DYNASTY

China, 1279-1368. The rounded rectangular seal surmounted by an ox standing stout, its legs carved as two unified supports, the muscular body of the animal extending into a short tail and a powerful neck surmounted by a stylized head with a broad snout and curling horns. The translucent stone of a pale celadon color with dark specks and cloudy inclusions.

Inscriptions: The seal face bearing an inscription in mirrored nine-fold script (jiudiewen).

Provenance: A private collection in Italy, 2015. Collection of Dr. Koos de Jong, acquired from the above. A Dutch art historian and collector, Dr. Koos de Jong has worked across several cultural institutions in the Netherlands from 1976, serving as the director of the European Ceramic Work Center in Den Bosch between 1999-2009, before retiring in 2009. He has authored hundreds of articles and several books on Dutch fine and decorative arts from the Middle Ages to the modern era. His scholarly interests expanded to Chinese material culture, culminating in the 2013 publication of Dragon & Horse: Saddle Rugs and Other Horse Tack from China and Beyond, a pioneering study on Chinese equestrian gear. Continuing this line of inquiry, his more recent book published in 2021, Small China: Early Chinese Miniatures, explores the largely overlooked world of Chinese miniature objects, combining archaeological research with art historical insight.

Dimensions: Length 3.3 cm

A highly stylized form of calligraphy known as ninefold seal script, also referred to as jiudiezhuan or jiudiewen, emerged during the Song dynasty (960–1279) for engraving of Chinese characters on official seals. Evolving from the archaic small seal script, this ornamental character form is distinguished by its tightly interwoven and convoluted strokes. Its influence extended beyond the Song, as it was also adopted for both Chinese and Khitan script seals during the Liao dynasty. This established a precedent subsequently followed by the Western Xia, Yuan, and Qing dynasties, which developed mock-archaic ninefold seal script versions for Tangut, Phags-pa, and Manchu scripts, respectively. While primarily used on imperial and official seals, the ninefold seal script occasionally appeared in other contexts, such as the personal seals of Daoist masters.
