Description

A RETICULATED WHITE JADE MINIATURE PENDANT OF TWO FROLICKING TIGERS, WARRING STATES OR WESTERN HAN DYNASTY

Published: Koos de Jong, Small China: Early Chinese Miniatures, 2021, p. 162, fig. 139.

China, 475 BC – 9 AD. Delicately carved from translucent white jade, depicting two tigers, each standing on its hind legs as if dancing, their muzzles and forepaws touching, the tails curled between their legs, the sinuous bodies detailed with a defined spine.

Provenance: Private collection, Italy, 2020. Collection of Dr. Koos de Jong, acquired from the above. A Dutch art historian and collector, Dr. Koos de Jong has worked across several cultural institutions in the Netherlands from 1976, serving as the director of the European Ceramic Work Center in Den Bosch between 1999-2009, before retiring in 2009. He has authored hundreds of articles and several books on Dutch fine and decorative arts from the Middle Ages to the modern era. His scholarly interests expanded to Chinese material culture, culminating in the 2013 publication of Dragon & Horse: Saddle Rugs and Other Horse Tack from China and Beyond, a pioneering study on Chinese equestrian gear. Continuing this line of inquiry, his more recent book published in 2021, Small China: Early Chinese Miniatures, explores the largely overlooked world of Chinese miniature objects, combining archaeological research with art historical insight.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. With extensive wear, some calcification, weathering, and small natural fissures, some of which have developed into hairline cracks over time.

Weight: 4.7 g
Dimensions: Height 2.8 cm

The tiger is one of the oldest and most revered animals in Chinese history, it was originally seen as the king of land animals and symbolized courage and power, especially as the third animal in the Chinese zodiac. In Daoist cosmology, the White Tiger represents the West among four directional guardian beasts. Tigers were believed to ward off evil, particularly when associated with the Daoist Heavenly Master Zhang, and Images of tigers were used to protect homes, and hats or shoes for children were often decorated with tiger-like features for added protection.

Literature comparison:
