Description

A GILDED AND SILVERED BRONZE BOX AND COVER, LIAN, HAN DYNASTY

Published: Koos de Jong, Small China: Early Chinese Miniatures, 2021, p. 53, fig. 25.

China, 206 BCE-9 AD. Of cylindrical form, supported on three cabriole legs, the body adorned with lobed cartouches issuing from overlaid strips of gilded bronze, the domed cover decorated with a quadrilobed blossom and applied with a central eye suspending a loose ring, all against a silvered ground.

Provenance: Rabi 'Hadji' Soleimani, London, 2001. Collection of Dr. Koos de Jong, acquired from the above. A Dutch art historian and collector, Dr. Koos de Jong has worked across several cultural institutions in the Netherlands from 1976, serving as the director of the European Ceramic Work Center in Den Bosch between 1999-2009, before retiring in 2009. He has authored hundreds of articles and several books on Dutch fine and decorative arts from the Middle Ages to the modern era. His scholarly interests expanded to Chinese material culture, culminating in the 2013 publication of Dragon & Horse: Saddle Rugs and Other Horse Tack from China and Beyond, a pioneering study on Chinese equestrian gear. Continuing this line of inquiry, his more recent book published in 2021, Small China: Early Chinese Miniatures, explores the largely overlooked world of Chinese miniature objects, combining archaeological research with art historical insight.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and manufacturing irregularities. Surface scratches, small nicks, and expected minor losses to inlays. The vessel with a naturally grown patina with areas of malachite encrustations.

Weight: 97.3 g
Dimensions: Height 6.1 cm

This type of keg was likely used as a toiletry container for storing perishable or volatile cosmetic substances. However, an inscription found on the underside of the cover of a similar vessel excavated in Shanxi, led Wei and Deydier (2001, p. 88-89) suggest that these containers were also used to store seal clay. Seal clay was employed in administrative practices to secure bundles of bamboo or wooden slips inscribed with official texts, which were tied together with a cord and then sealed.
