Description

A GROUP LOT WITH THREE MAJAPAHIT TERRACOTTA HEADS OF WOMEN

Indonesia, East Java, Majapahit Empire (1297-1527). A group of three terracotta heads, each modeled with distinct facial features and hairstyles, reflecting the refined craftsmanship of Majapahit sculptors. The largest head shows a broad, heart-shaped coiffure with fine incised striations and a calm, confident expression. The second head features softly rounded contours and ornamental earrings framing the face, the delicate mouth slightly open. The smallest head has a tall conical coiffure and circular ear ornaments.

Provenance: Private collection of A. Hansen, Denmark. Mr. Hansen (b. 1955) is a retired Danish Supreme Court lawyer and lifelong collector with a deep passion for history and culture. His collecting journey began at the age of eight with stamps, encouraged by his father, and quickly developed into a serious pursuit. By 1982, his specialized collection of Greenland postal history earned international recognition. Following this success, Mr. Hansen turned his focus to fine art and antiquities, beginning with Danish art and later expanding into East and Southeast Asian artifacts after an inspiring Japanese exhibition in 1985. Over the following decades, his collection grew to include mostly ceramic artworks from Annam, Khmer, Burmese, and Thai origins, acquired through reputable collectors and auction houses. The largest head bears an old collector’s numbering ‘496’ at the lower back.
Condition: Overall good condition, with minor losses, weathering, and surface wear consistent with age. The largest head with minor chipping to the coiffure, all with small nicks and encrustations.

Weight: 775 g
Dimensions: Height 7 cm, 8,4 cm, and 10 cm

The Majapahit Empire, which flourished in East Java, Indonesia, from the late 13th to the early 16th century, was one of Southeast Asia’s most influential Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms, renowned for its cultural sophistication and far-reaching political power. Under the reign of King Hayam Wuruk (1350–1389), Majapahit’s capital, Trowulan, emerged as a vibrant center of religious devotion and artistic production. Among the most distinctive legacies of the Majapahit period is its prolific use of terracotta, employed for both utilitarian and symbolic purposes.

Terracotta artifacts from the Majapahit Empire include figurines, architectural elements such as roof tiles, bricks, and columns, as well as everyday objects like water jars, stoves, vases, and piggy banks. These works provide invaluable insight into the daily life, attire, belief systems, and social structures of the time. Majapahit terracotta figures depict a wide range of subjects, from deities, dancers, and mythical beasts to animals and common people, reflecting both the religious and secular dimensions of the empire’s artistic output.
