Description

AN ANNAMESE COBALT BLUE AND WHITE STONEWARE BOTTLE VASE

Vietnam, 18th century or earlier. The pear-shaped body supported on a short foot and rising to a waisted neck with an everted rim. The exterior finely decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with stylized chrysanthemum blossoms intertwined with scrolling tendrils, framed above and below by double-line borders and foliate cartouches containing schematically rendered trefoils and floral designs. The neck encircled by a band of narrow upright leaves, while the interior of the mouth finished with further decorative lines. The unglazed base is coated with a reddish-brown wash.

Provenance: Private collection of A. Hansen, Denmark. Mr. Hansen (b. 1955) is a retired Danish Supreme Court lawyer and lifelong collector with a deep passion for history and culture. His collecting journey began at the age of eight with stamps, encouraged by his father, and quickly developed into a serious pursuit. By 1982, his specialized collection of Greenland postal history earned international recognition. Following this success, Mr. Hansen turned his focus to fine art and antiquities, beginning with Danish art and later expanding into East and Southeast Asian artifacts after an inspiring Japanese exhibition in 1985. Over the following decades, his collection grew to include mostly ceramic artworks from Annam, Khmer, Burmese, and Thai origins, acquired through reputable collectors and auction houses:
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and manufacturing flaws, fine craquelure to the glaze, kiln grit, and small areas with encrustations.

Weight: 463.0 g
Dimensions: Height 19.4 cm

Chinese blue-and-white ceramics produced under the Ming dynasty circulated widely throughout Asia during the 14th and 15th centuries. This extensive distribution encouraged the production of similar wares in other regions, notably Vietnam, which sought to participate in the regional ceramic exchange. The development and chronology of Vietnamese blue-and-white ceramics from this period, however, remain only partially understood. The principal evidence for early Vietnamese production of blue-and-white ceramics was uncovered in the early 1990s with the discovery of a shipwreck dated c. 1450–1500 off the coast near Hoi An. The vessel contained more than 250,000 Vietnamese ceramic objects, demonstrating the considerable scale of ceramic manufacture and trade in the region.

Vietnamese and Chinese blue-and-white ceramics may at times display similar shapes and decorative motifs. Nevertheless, several distinctive characteristics clearly differentiate them. Vietnamese blue-and-white wares are high-fired stoneware, whereas Chinese examples are typically porcelain. The white ground of Vietnamese ceramics tends to have a soft, creamy tone, in contrast to the bright, crisp white of Chinese porcelain. Moreover, the decoration on Vietnamese ceramics from this period often appears blurred or softly rendered, unlike the sharp, precise motifs characteristic of Chinese blue-and-white wares. Additionally, certain vessel forms and decorative patterns produced in Vietnam have no known counterparts in the Chinese tradition.
