Description

AN IRON BLACK-GLAZED KALONG WARE ‘CROW’ DISH, LAN NA KINDGOM

Northern Thailand, presumably 19th century or earlier. The deep, rounded sides supported on a short foot and rising to a sharply angled rim. The interior decorated in iron-black underglaze with bold brushstrokes to depict a stylized flock of crows in flight, framed above and below by double-line borders. The exterior adorned in dark brown underglaze with sinuous lines suggesting floral motifs, all beneath a translucent glaze. The base left unglazed, revealing the buff-colored ware beneath.

Provenance: Private collection of A. Hansen, Denmark. Mr. Hansen (b. 1955) is a retired Danish Supreme Court lawyer and lifelong collector with a deep passion for history and culture. His collecting journey began at the age of eight with stamps, encouraged by his father, and quickly developed into a serious pursuit. By 1982, his specialized collection of Greenland postal history earned international recognition. Following this success, Mr. Hansen turned his focus to fine art and antiquities, beginning with Danish art and later expanding into East and Southeast Asian artifacts after an inspiring Japanese exhibition in 1985. Over the following decades, his collection grew to include mostly ceramic artworks from Annam, Khmer, Burmese, and Thai origins, acquired through reputable collectors and auction houses.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and manufacturing irregularities, pitting, fine craquelure to the glaze, and some large firing cracks and hairlines around the foot.

Weight: 547.5 g
Dimensions: Diameter 22.8 cm

In 1933, archaeologists uncovered approximately 200 kilns at Wiang Kalong, providing compelling evidence of high-fired ceramic production for local use during the zenith of the Lan Na Kingdom. Wiang Kalong was an ancient settlement situated at the foothills of the Doi Dong Mountain Range, near Ban Pa Lan Village in Wiang Pa Pao District, Northern Thailand. The name ‘Wiang Kalong’ has been traditionally interpreted in two distinct ways: as the ‘City of Kalong Trees’ or the ‘City of Lost Crows’. The former refers to the once-abundant white orchid trees of the area, known in Thai as ‘kalong’. The latter, more evocative, is believed to stem from the complex and disorienting entrances of the city, so intricate that even crows would lose their way.

Ceramic wares produced in Wiang Kalong were notable for their light-colored clay, obtained from nearby fine-grained deposits in tones of white, soft yellow, and grey. This clay, low in sand content and rich in kaolin, allowed potters to shape elegant vessels with chalky buff-colored bodies and delicate glazes resembling the hue of a rain-filled sky. Within the broader context of Thai ceramic traditions, vessels from Wiang Kalong stand out for their expressive underglaze decoration, where loose and fluid brushwork evokes natural elements.

Black crows are one of the most distinctive motifs depicted in Kalong ceramic wares, typically rendered in a stylized manner and shown in flight across an open sky. Other recurring designs include floral elements, trees, and fish, alongside imagery influenced by distant artistic traditions. These include representations of pavilions, flowers, and dragons inspired by Chinese and Vietnamese ceramics. Clear-glazed wares were frequently decorated with stylized flower petals, reflecting both technical skill and aesthetic refinement in the ceramic production of the region.
