Description

A VERY LARGE SAWANKHALOK STONEWARE WATER VESSEL (KENDI)

Thailand, Sukothai province, Si Satchanalai, presumably 15th-16th century. Of typical form, the globular body supported on a splayed foot with a recessed base, fitted with a mammiform spout, elegantly formed to one side, and surmounted by a slender flanged neck with an everted rim. Painted in underglaze iron brown, the body decorated with entwined foliate almond-shaped cartouches containing peony blossoms amidst scrolling tendrils. The spout and neck further embellished with distinctive pointed leaves and encircling decorative bands. The vessel covered in a creamy-white, finely crackled glaze.

Provenance: Private collection of A. Hansen, Denmark. Mr. Hansen (b. 1955) is a retired Danish Supreme Court lawyer and lifelong collector with a deep passion for history and culture. His collecting journey began at the age of eight with stamps, encouraged by his father, and quickly developed into a serious pursuit. By 1982, his specialized collection of Greenland postal history earned international recognition. Following this success, Mr. Hansen turned his focus to fine art and antiquities, beginning with Danish art and later expanding into East and Southeast Asian artifacts after an inspiring Japanese exhibition in 1985. Over the following decades, his collection grew to include mostly ceramic artworks from Annam, Khmer, Burmese, and Thai origins, acquired through reputable collectors and auction houses.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities. Few minor chips and small losses to the foot. The underside coated with a white slip.

Weight: 2,284 g
Dimension: Height 29.5 cm

The kendi is a distinctive type of vessel with deep historical and ritual significance in Southeast Asia since ancient times. Distinguished by its two openings, one at the neck and another at the spout, it differs from conventional jugs or pitchers by the absence of a handle, setting it apart in both form and function. Its design allows for hygienic communal use, as liquid is poured directly into the mouth without the lips touching the spout. This feature rendered the kendi especially suitable for both ceremonial and everyday contexts.

Along with its earlier form, the kundika, the kendi frequently appears in sculpture and painting as a sacred attribute held by deities such as Brahma and Shiva in Hinduism, and Maitreya or Avalokitesvara in Mahayana Buddhism. These vessels were traditionally used to hold holy water drawn from sacred rivers and blessed by the gods. In royal coronation ceremonies, the sanctified water was employed in purification rites, wherein the newly anointed king would cleanse himself as a symbolic act of divine sanction and legitimation.
