WAN'YO: A KODAIJI-STYLE LACQUER BOX AND COVER, 20TH CENTURY
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve

Japan, c. 1950. Of rectangular form with rounded edges, with a fitted cover with an overhanging rim, bearing a lustrous roiro-nuri ground, and decorated to the lid and sides in iro-e hiramaki-e, to depict a Kodaiji-inspired split design enclosing the kiku (chrysanthemum) mon and 5-7 paulownia (go-shichi kiri) mon on a kinji ground juxtaposed by a verdant maple tree. The interior of nashiji with roiro rims.

Inscriptions: Inscribed to the tomobako, ‘Momoyama makie, tebunko’ [‘A small document box, in the Momoyama Period style’]. To the other side, ‘Wan'yo saku Heiando tsukuru kore’ [‘This is made by Wan'yo for the Heiando Studio’] with two seals ‘Wan'yo’ and ‘Heiando zo’.

Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and manufacturing irregularities.

The bold combination of naturalistic landscape designs and scattered paulownia crests on contrasting diagonal fields divided by a zigzag border is characteristic of a distinctive style of Momoyama-period lacquer decoration known as Kōdaiji, which was current from the 1580s through the early seventeenth century. The style is associated with the military potentate Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536–1598) and named for the Kōdaiji temple, where his memorial shrine was built in 1616. The shrine's lacquered interior, along with some thirty lacquer objects of personal use that are preserved there, are similarly decorated with naturalistic designs, mainly of autumn grasses, which are often combined with scattered paulownia crests, the personal emblem of the Toyotomi family.
