China, ca. 3rd century BC. Of arched form, each extremity finely carved with detailed dragon heads in profile. The slightly open mouths show the teeth and fangs, the eyes are stressed with a slanting line, the snout is pointed and there is a tuft of hair under the chin. The heads, whose contours are highlighted by a plain, narrow band that also delimits the arched section of the pendant, are separated from the rest of the body by another tuft of hair engraved with thin parallel lines. Each side is filled with small curls in relief and the lower section depicts two phoenixes in openwork. The pale celadon jade with creamy calcification and russet shading. Small perforation for suspension at the center top.

Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.
Condition: Very good condition with wear, traces of weathering and signs of prolonged burial, minuscule nicks and minor nibbling.

Weight: 88 g
Dimensions: Length 17 cm

This huang shows a degree of complexity in design marked by its sophisticated and rich details. It is representative of a style that was primarily spread in eastern Anhui, northern Jiangsu (Xuzhou area) and the western Shandong provinces, characterized by high quality workmanship, detailed carving, openwork patterns, and dragons as well as phoenixes as the main motifs.
