Description

A WHITE AND BROWN JADE ‘CHILONG’ ARCHER’S RING ORNAMENT, HAN DYNASTY
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve

Published: Jean-Paul Desroches (ed.) et al, Two Americans in Paris: A Quest for Asian Art, Paris, 2016, p. 79, no. 174.

Exhibited:
1. Pointe-à-Callière Museum, From the Lands of Asia. The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Montréal, 17th November 2016-19th March 2017.
2. Kimbell Art Museum, From the Lands of Asia. The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Fort Worth, Texas, 4th March-19th August 2018.

China, 202 BC-220 AD. Superbly carved in the form of an archer’s ring, known as she, with a central aperture drilled from both sides. Decorated with a dragon (chilong) and a monkey climbing on it, as well as fine scrolls. The translucent stone with areas of white color with pale brown and russet shadings.

Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, traces of weathering, and minuscule nibbling.

Weight: 33 g
Dimensions: Length 7.2 cM

Expert’s note: The oval shape of this pendant is derived from an archer’s ring worn to protect the thumb of the archer when drawing the string of a bow. Such rings were documented in the late Shang period (13th-11th centuries BC), but it was during the Han dynasty that the typical oblong ring was transformed, becoming the shield-shape central element of small elaborate pendants richly decorated with dragons.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related ‘phoenix’ archer’s ring, dated to Warring states 475-221 BC, in the Shanghai Museum.
