Description

A GREEN AND RUSSET JADE ‘BIRD’ PENDANT, EARLY WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTY
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve

Published: Myrna Myers (ed.) & Filippo Salviati (auth.), Radiant Stones. Archaic Chinese Jades, Paris, 2000, no. 68.

China, ca. 1100-1000 BC. Finely carved in the form of a crested bird in profile with a short, pointed beak. The translucent stone of green color with areas of russet shading and small areas of creamy calcification. A single minuscule perforation for suspension.

Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.
Condition: Good condition with wear, traces of weathering and signs of prolonged burial, small nicks, smoothened chips and natural fissures, some of which have developed into hairline cracks.

Weight: 8 g
Dimensions: Length 8.7 cm

Expert's note:
Jades pendants, such as the present lot, can be traced back to as early as the Shang Dynasty. It has been theorized that they were once made as adornments and supports for elaborate lacquer vessels imitating the designs of ritual bronzes (see image section). None of these complete vessels have ever been found. This original intended use eventually fell out of fashion, with the repurpose of these archaic examples for bodily adornment. See Qian Yang's thesis: The Circulation of Jades in Early China (Late Neolithic – Eastern Zhou, ca. 4500 -221 BC).

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related jade plaque of a bird, in the British Museum, accession number 1947,0712.465. Compare a related jade ‘bird’ pendant, dated to the Western Zhou dynasty, 4.9 cm length, in the National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian Institution, accession number S1987.635.
