In his book ‘Radiant Stones’ Filippo Salviati writes: although it is pierced for suspension, the ultimate function of this ornament of white jade of possible Khotanese origin is a mystery: it might be viewed as a columnar pendant, but it also resembles a miniature stele supporting a mythical animal. This three-dimensional carving of a winged feline, known as a bixie or Chinese chimera, is stylistically similar to the monumental stone animals which lined the spirit roads leading to important tombs from the Han period.

Each side of the ornament is enclosed within narrow borders and displays a unique scene, reminiscent of a narrative frieze. One side illustrates a progression from left to right, beginning with a kneeling figure, possibly winged or cloaked, holding curling vegetation. This figure may represent a Daoist immortal (xian), offering a sacred herb linked to the quest for eternal life. Ahead of him, a bear-like beast emerges from stylized clouds, both figures moving toward a seated deity, likely Xi Wang Mu, the Queen Mother of the West. The imagery draws on popular Daoist themes from the Han dynasty, expressing contemporary fascinations with transcendence and immortality. The reverse side contrasts with an energetic composition of hybrid mythical beasts, combining dragon, feline, and birds, interwoven in a continuous, swirling rhythm.
