Ito Tozan I (1846–1920) was a pioneering Kyoto ceramicist renowned for blending traditional Japanese pottery with refined painting techniques. Initially trained as a painter, he later studied ceramics under Kameya Kyokutei and became a key figure in the development of Kyoto ware (Kyo-yaki), especially in porcelain. His elegant works earned international acclaim at expositions in Europe and the U.S. during the Meiji era. In recognition of his artistry and contribution to Japanese culture, he was appointed an Imperial Household Artist in 1917—one of the highest honors for artists in Japan at the time.
