Description

A LARGE UNDERGLAZE-BLUE AND COPPER-RED-DECORATED ‘GRAPEVINES’ JAR, JOSEON DYNASTY
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve

Expert’s note: This exquisite jar acquired a uniquely graceful form, reminiscent of a flower turning towards the sun, due to its tilting during the firing process. At some point in the early 20th century, after the jar had reached Europe, a neatly fitted wood stand was added to ‘correct’ its tilted shape. However, it's now up to the new owner to decide whether they prefer to display the vase with or without this stand.

Korea, 18th-19th century. The globular jar set with a cylindrical neck and rising from a short foot, the exterior decorated in underglaze blue and iron oxide to depict branches bearing leaves and grapes, all below a band of foliate scroll encircling the neck.

Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.
Condition: Overall good condition with expected wear and obvious flaws including tilting, pitting, kiln grit, and dark spots. Light surface scratches, an old chip to the foot, two short hairline cracks to the rim, a fine star crack to the interior, the base with a small chip and few tiny nicks.

Weight: 2.5 kg (excl. stand), 2.9 kg (incl. stand)
Dimensions: Diameter 24 cm, Height 23 cm (incl. stand)

With an associated fitted wood stand. (2)

Grapes and grapevines were popular subjects in Joseon ceramics and ink paintings, much like blossoms and bamboo. On this globular jar, the leaves are painted in cobalt blue while the vines and grape bunches are decorated in copper red, a pigment much more difficult to manipulate than blue or even iron brown. Vessels with similar shapes and copper-red designs were made during the eighteenth century at kilns not linked to the court porcelain manufacturing center at Bunwon.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related jar with grapevine decoration in copper red, dated to the mid-18th century, Korea, 25.6 cm tall, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 1979.413.2.

Auction result comparison:
Type: Related
Auction: Christie’s New York, 18 March 2014, lot 770
Price: USD 4,750 or approx. EUR 5,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing
Description: A blue and white globe-form jar, Joseon dynasty (19th century)
Expert remark: Compare the closely related form and manner of painting with similar vines. Note the size (18.6 cm) and lack of copper-red decoration.
