Description

A WHITE SLIP-INLAID CELADON STONEWARE BOWL WITH CRANES AND CLOUDS, GORYEO DYNASTY, LATE 13TH-14TH CENTURY
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve

Expert’s note: While most Goryeo sanggam ceramics combine white and black inlay, rare examples with only white slip are known from the late Goryeo period. These bowls often feature restrained floral or geometric designs, like the present lot, and may reflect regional kiln practices or deliberate aesthetic refinement. The absence of iron inlay here is consistent with a small group of authentic pieces attributed to the 13th–14th century. Alternatively, it is possible that the black slip has faded or detached over time due to burial conditions or firing flaws. Either way, the present bowl belongs to a rare and academically significant category within the Goryeo celadon tradition.

Korea. Well balanced on a short ring foot with curved walls, inlaid in white slip on the interior with a central chrysanthemum blossom within a yo’i fungus-head-shaped surround, bordered by a wide frieze of four cranes flying amongst white-slip clouds, all enclosed by a geometric band below the rim. The exterior inlaid with four chrysanthemum medallions in white between a stiff upright lappet band and bowstrings below the rim.

Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities including kiln grit, glaze recesses, pitting, and dark spots, light glaze flaking to the rim.

Weight: 517.5 g
Dimensions: Diameter 18.3 cm

This inlay technique is called 'sanggam', which was invented by Korean ceramic artists in the twelfth century and adorned tableware and ritual vessels used by the court and nobility for two centuries. The design was incised into the clay body of the vessel and then filled with slip (diluted clay). The excess slip would have been removed before the piece was biscuit fired, then the bottle was covered with a translucent celadon glaze and fired again. The development of the sanggam inlay technique signifies the elegance and innovativeness of Goryeo ceramic production. No similar inlay technique was used by Chinese craftsmen at this time.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related celadon bowl with cloud, phoenix, and lotus motifs in inlaid white and black slip, dated to the Goryeo period, 12th century, 19.4 cm wide, in the Birmingham Museum of Art, accession number AFI.374.2009.

Auction result comparison:
Type: Closely related
Auction: Christie’s New York, 18 March 2014, lot 729
Price: USD 8,125 or approx. EUR 9,400 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing
Description: An inlaid celadon bowl, Goryeo dynasty, 13th century
Expert remark: Compare the closely related form and similar slip decoration with cranes flying among scrolling clouds. Note the similar size (19.5 cm) and the black iron-slip.
