Description

A GREEN AND BEIGE JADE CEREMONIAL BLADE, GUI, LONGSHAN CULTURE
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve

Published: Myrna Myers (ed.) & Filippo Salviati (auth.), Radiant Stones. Archaic Chinese Jades, Paris, 2000, no. 37.

China, ca. 2500-1700 BC. Of elongated, rectangular form, with an aperture at the upper section, which was drilled from only one side. While the surface is finely polished and plain, two series of parallel bands are carved on the sides of the blade near the hole. The semi-translucent stone is of pale green color with beige shading and dark veining.

Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.
Condition: Good condition with wear, traces of weathering and signs of prolonged burial, nibbling, notches, and natural fissures, some of which have developed into small hairline cracks.

Weight: 204 g
Dimensions: Length 21.5 cm

From ca. 4500 BC onwards, jade was employed for exceptionally elegant versions of utilitarian stone tools. Made in jade, the tools were not for daily use but for displays of status and power. Jades, as well as bronzes, were thus used for special ritual or ceremonial versions of standard everyday items. The material itself was scarcer and required more labor to work it than ordinary stone. Jade blades were ground more thinly than the stone tools they copied. Had they been used, they would have broken. Details of shape and design - in other words, aesthetic qualities - were chosen to show off the distinctions between the jade and the stone axe.
