Description

A CARVED BLUE AND WHITE ‘FLORAL’ BOWL, TRANSITIONAL PERIOD, FROM THE HATCHER CARGO
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve

Expert’s note: The present bowl is distinguished by its unusual combination of cobalt-blue painting with carved decoration beneath a clear glaze. This hybrid technique is very rarely encountered outside of the series recovered from the Hatcher cargo and must have been part of a short-lived or experimental production phase, likely curtailed by the high level of craftsmanship required, even despite its striking visual effect.

China, c. 1643-1645. Well potted with deep rounded sides rising from a straight foot, finely painted in cobalt blue and meticulously carved to the exterior through the hard porcelain body prior to glazing to depict sprays of chrysanthemums, peonies, and lotus alternating with butterflies and insects. The well with a central roundel enclosing a pavilion in a mountain and river landscape. The recessed base with a double circle in underglaze blue.

Provenance: Michael Hatcher collection, recovered from the ‘Hatcher cargo’ in 1983. Christie’s Amsterdam,14 March 1984 (label to base). The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France, acquired from the above. Michael Hatcher (b. 1940) is a British explorer and marine salvor who specialized in salvage work in the South China Sea. In 1981, he was involved in investigating the wreck of the Dutch submarine K XVII. He is especially known for his recovery of large quantities of Chinese porcelain from the VOC ship Geldermalsen (known as the ‘Nanking cargo’) which was sold at Christie's in Amsterdam in 1986. Previously, he had discovered another ship in the South China Sea, which became known as the ‘Hatcher cargo’. A part of the cargo salvaged in this wreck was sold at Christie’s Amsterdam in March 1984.
Condition: Good condition with expected wear and manufacturing irregularities including kiln grit, a small firing crack, and fritting along the upper rim. Two hairlines running from the rim towards the well. Minor surface alteration consistent with objects from maritime salvage.

Weight: 731 g
Dimensions: Diameter 21.7 cm

The present bowl was recovered among some 25,000 vessels found on the wreck of an unidentified Asian ship in the South China Sea. This ship is known as the 'Hatcher cargo’ after Captain Michael Hatcher who discovered her in 1983. There is no written record testifying to the exact year of her sinking but the covers of two oviform jars inscribed in underglaze blue with a cyclical date corresponding to 1643 make fairly precise dating of the wreck possible. The cargo primarily consisted of two types of blue-and-white porcelain made at Jingdezhen at the end of the Ming dynasty – late variations of 'kraak' ware and examples of a 'transitional' style characterized by landscape motifs and naturalistic plants and birds. The ship may have been on its way to Indonesia, carrying also spices, silk and other commodities for sale to the Dutch whose East India Company had offices in Batavia (modern Jakarta). Chinese junks sailing to Batavia or Bantam varied in size from 200 to 800 tons. The journey out was made over three weeks during December and January and the return trip took place in June and July.

Literature comparison:
A similar bowl from the Hatcher cargo is in the Butler Collection and illustrated in Teresa Canepa and Katherine Butler, Leaping the Dragon Gate, The Sir Michael Butler Collection of Seventeenth-Century Chinese Porcelain, London 2021, No III.1.109a,b, where the authors mention that this type was extremely rare or never seen before, see p. 132. Compare a closely related carved blue and white bowl, 18.5 cm diameter, also from the Hatcher cargo and sold by Robert McPherson Antiques, Leeuwarden, stock number 25257.

Auction result comparison:
Type: Closely related
Auction: Rob Michiels, Bruges, 18 April 2024, lot 871
Price: EUR 3,900 or approx. EUR 4,000 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing
Description: A Chinese blue and white 'Hatcher cargo' bowl with floral design, Transitional period
Expert remark: Compare the closely related form, carved and cobalt-blue decoration, and motifs. Note the size (18.5 cm). This bowl also originates from the Hatcher Cargo and was sold in a subsequent Christie’s sale in June 1984, following the auction of the present lot.
