Description

A LARGE SWATOW BLUE AND WHITE ‘PHEASANTS AND DUCKS’ BRACKET-LOBED CHARGER, 16TH CENTURY
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve

China. The deep sides raised on a short tapering foot and rising to an everted foliate rim, painted in lighter and darker shades of cobalt blue with a roundel at the well enclosing an idyllic landscape depicting a pair of pheasants, lingzhi fungi, two ducks in a lotus pond, and pairs of bats flying below the setting sun. The cavetto with a band of prunus and peonies, and the barbed rim decorated with eight floral cartouches above a diaper patterned border. The exterior painted with various floral sprays divided by lines.

Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.
Condition: Good condition with minor wear, light scratches, some hairlines to the sides, and firing irregularities including kiln grit, few firing cracks, dark spots, and warping.

Weight: 2.3 kg
Dimensions: Diameter 40.1 cm

The dish is adorned with birds and flying creatures, all in pairs, including a pair of pheasants, a pair of ducks, and two pairs of bats, thus symbolizing harmony in marriage. Combined with other auspicious motifs such as lingzhi and lotus, the design conveys wishes for a joyful and enduring union filled with health and happiness. It would have made an ideal gift for a newlywed couple.

Collectors and scholars called this type of ware ‘Swatow’ after an old Dutch transliteration of Shantou, a port in northern Guangong province, mistakenly believed to have been the port from which they were shipped. Merchants traded them to countries in Southeast Asia such as Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia as well as to Japan and Holland. They are characterized by coarse sandy bases. The designs are all rendered in free and spontaneous brushstrokes. This dish is painted with a riverscape in the center with water plants and birds.
