Description

A GILT-BRONZE ‘MAKARA’ BANGLE, SHOUZHUO, QING DYNASTY
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve

China, 1644-1912 or earlier. Heavily cast, the circular bangle with two facing makara heads, their jaws locked together, finely detailed with almond shaped eyes, ears pushed to the back, and minutely incised scales.

Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.
Condition: Very good condition with wear, traces of use, casting irregularities, small nicks, tiny dings, expected rubbing and minor losses to gilt.

Weight: 144.9 g
Dimensions: Diameter 8.3 cm

This bangle features two confronting makara heads, a mythical sea creature which resembles a water crocodile. Bracelets with dragon or makara heads can trace their origin to the Yuan dynasty, saw development through the Ming dynasty, and provided inspiration to later bracelets in the Qing dynasty. See Yang Zhishui, Zhongguo Gudai Jinyin Shoushi, vol. 2, Beijing, 2014, p. 635.
