China, 3rd-2nd century BC. Of elliptical form, with deep rounded sides supported on an oval foot ring, flanked by a pair of 'butterfly-wing' shaped ears set at a low angle incised with C-form scrolls, the short sides flanked by a pair of sinuous dragon-form handles, the shallow bowl incised to the center with a flower-head, the exterior decorated with dense C-form scroll-work. The translucent rock crystal with patches of russet inclusions.

Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.

Weight: 244.5 g

This ear-shaped bowl belongs to a type that was widespread in the Han period. These bowls were inspired by the lacquered wooden bowls common between the 5th century BC and the 3rd century AD, see an example dated to the Warring States period in the Tokyo National Museum, accession number TJ-5664.

This type of vessel was highly prized and expensive. However, certain writings recommended that everyday objects should not be used for funeral rites. That's why many funerary objects are imitations of everyday objects used by the deceased. These objects adorned the tombs of aristocrats. This bowl is a perfect example, not only for its finesse, but also for its use of rock crystal, which, like jade, was reserved for the wealthiest families.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related crystal ear cup, dated to the Han dynasty, 9 cm wide, in the British Museum, registration number 2000,1005.1.
