Description

A NABESHIMA CELADON-GLAZED AND UNDERGLAZE-BLUE-DECORATED ‘KINUTA’ MALLET VASE, 19TH-20TH CENTURY
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve

Japan. The vase is robustly potted with a mallet-shaped body with angular, sloping shoulders, rising to a tall neck flanked by a pair of handles in the form of dragon-headed fish, below the widely flared, dish-shaped mouth. The lower section of the body is enclosed by eight roundels picked out in cobalt blue and white to depict auspicious flowers including peonies, prunus, and peaches.

Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and minimal firing irregularities.

Weight: 1.1 kg
Dimensions: Height 25.5 cm

Expert’s note:
The mallet form and celadon glaze of this Nabeshima vase are based on a famous type of vase from the Southern Song dynasty that was likely first introduced to China in the forms of glass vases and bottles from the Islamic West and Iran, and has been revered in Japan for more than seven hundred years, eventually becoming known by the Japanese name kinuta seiji (‘celadon-green mallet-shaped vases’). See an example with dragon-fish handles dated to the Southern Song dynasty, about 1250-1279, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number C.103-1967.
