Description

A SILVER REPOUSSé ‘MACCHANU’ BOX AND COVER, PHNOM PENH, CIRCA 1900
This lot is a museum deaccession and is therefore offered without reserve

Cambodia. The multi-lobed box with a flush-fitting cover finely chased and embossed with Macchanu, son of Hanuman, in a dynamic pose, his fishtail swung to the back as he positions his hands assertively to the sides, a sword in one hand, adorned with elaborate jewelry. The sides of the box decorated with panels enclosing flowers borne on leafy scrolling vines.

Inscriptions: The base impressed with the retailer’s mark ‘D-A-C’.

Provenance: Galerie Hardt (established in 1976), Radevormwald, Germany, before 2020. Acquired by the gallery’s founder Peter Hardt (b. 1946) during his extensive travels in Asia, the first of which occurred during a formative world tour in 1973. Throughout his storied career, Peter Kienzle-Hardt organized countless exhibitions and participated in major international art fairs. He made many important contacts during this time and eventually met the Kienzle siblings, who shared his passion for Asian art and culture. A strong bond and deep friendship developed, ultimately leading to the creation of the Museum für Asiatische Kunst decades later in 2014. While the museum’s permanent exhibition predominantly comprised pieces from the Kienzle Family Collection, Peter Kienzle-Hardt supplemented it with objects from his own collection. Before his death in 2019, Horst Kienzle bequeathed his entire property to Peter and legally adopted him as his son, who has been using the name Peter Kienzle-Hardt ever since.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and manufacturing irregularities. Minor dents and small nicks.

Weight: 108.5 g
Dimensions: Length 7.5 cm

The lid of this small box shows Macchanu, the fish-tailed child of Hanuman, the monkey king, and Suvannamaccha, his mermaid wife. Hanuman was a key figure in the Indian epic tale the Ramayana. Decorative boxes such as this are characteristic of Cambodia and often take the form of astrological or mythological creatures like Macchanu, although many are shaped like birds or clam shells or pumpkins. They were used to hold personal belongings such as cosmetics, betel nuts, opium, jewelry or traditional medicines.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related silver lidded box with Micheno, Phnom Penh, c.1900, 7.5 cm wide, in the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, object number A4138.
