Description

A BRONZE ‘GANESHA’ ALTAR BELL, ANGKOR PERIOD, 12TH-13TH CENTURY
This lot is a museum deaccession and is therefore offered without reserve

Khmer Empire. Finely cast, the domed bell with a flared rim incised with a double circular band. Crowning the bell is a figure of Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity, standing upright and dressed in short pleated shoti and adorned with ornate jewelry, his head crowned with a tiered mukuta (headdress). He is depicted with his characteristic round belly and holds a bowl in his left hand and a broken tusk in his right. The bell produces a good sound when struck.

Provenance: Galerie Hardt (established in 1976), Radevormwald, Germany, before 2020. Acquired by the gallery’s founder Peter Hardt (b. 1946) during his extensive travels in Asia, the first of which occurred during a formative world tour in 1973. Throughout his storied career, Peter Kienzle-Hardt organized countless exhibitions and participated in major international art fairs. He made many important contacts during this time and eventually met the Kienzle siblings, who shared his passion for Asian art and culture. A strong bond and deep friendship developed, ultimately leading to the creation of the Museum für Asiatische Kunst decades later in 2014. While the museum’s permanent exhibition predominantly comprised pieces from the Kienzle Family Collection, Peter Kienzle-Hardt supplemented it with objects from his own collection. Before his death in 2019, Horst Kienzle bequeathed his entire property to Peter and legally adopted him as his son, who has been using the name Peter Kienzle-Hardt ever since.
Labels: Galerie Hardt, printed ‘Ganesha Glocke Bronze, 13 Jh Thailand’, and priced at EUR 1,250.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities. Few minuscule nicks, occasional light scratches. The bronze with a fine, naturally-grown, smooth patina with areas of malachite encrustation.

Weight: 264 g
Dimensions: Height 14.1 cm

In Southeast Asia, Ganesha, the Hindu deity who removes obstacles, has a more independent status than in India. His images were often housed in separate temples as primary icons of worship. Ganesha was introduced to Cambodian artists in the 7th century. Over the next five centuries, India's chubby elephant icon was transformed into a sleek, anthropomorphic figure.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related Khmer bronze altar bell cast with Ganesha on the finial, 19.4 cm long, dated to the 12th century, in the Minneapolis Institute of Art, accession number 91.22.2.
