Description

A GROUP OF TWO MINIATURE BRONZE VESSELS, CIRCA 2ND CENTURY AD OR EARLIER
This lot is a museum deaccession and is therefore offered without reserve

Central Asia, probably Iran. Each finely cast, the first with a globular body supported on three curved legs and rising to a hexagonal-section neck with lobed everted rim. The second of flattened ovoid form with subtly ribbed sides and neck and a broad circular mouth, the rim, shoulder, and foot each encircled by bands of circular recesses. (2)

Provenance: Galerie Hardt (established in 1976), Radevormwald, Germany, before 2020. Acquired by the gallery’s founder Peter Hardt (b. 1946) during his extensive travels in Asia, the first of which occurred during a formative world tour in 1973. Throughout his storied career, Peter Kienzle-Hardt organized countless exhibitions and participated in major international art fairs. He made many important contacts during this time and eventually met the Kienzle siblings, who shared his passion for Asian art and culture. A strong bond and deep friendship developed, ultimately leading to the creation of the Museum für Asiatische Kunst decades later in 2014. While the museum’s permanent exhibition predominantly comprised pieces from the Kienzle Family Collection, Peter Kienzle-Hardt supplemented it with objects from his own collection. Before his death in 2019, Horst Kienzle bequeathed his entire property to Peter and legally adopted him as his son, who has been using the name Peter Kienzle-Hardt ever since.
Condition: Good condition with expected wear, casting irregularities, traces of use, encrustations, minor dents, small nicks, remnants of paste, each with a rich, naturally grown patina with areas of malachite and cuprite encrustation.

Weight: 125.1 g (total)
Dimensions: Height 6.5 cm (each)

Kohl, a dark mineral-based eye cosmetic, was widely used in antiquity for both aesthetic and protective purposes, particularly across Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley, and Central Asia. In the Oxus Civilization (ca. 2300-1700 BC), small cast bronze vessels—often tripod in form like one of the present bottles—were used to store kohl, appearing in both domestic and burial contexts. This tradition continued into the Parthian period, especially in northeastern Iran and surrounding regions, where metal kohl containers of similar form were produced with greater precision. Their persistence reflects a long-standing cultural emphasis on personal adornment, hygiene, and status.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related bronze tripod vessel, found in Masjed Soleyman, Iran, and dated to the 2nd century AD, in the collection of the Louvre, accession number SB 9029.
