Description

A LARGE ARCHAIC PALE BROWN AND GREENISH-WHITE JADE CEREMONIAL AXE BLADE, DAO, NEOLITHIC PERIOD

China, c. 3000-1700 BC. The long blade skillfully rendered with a crisp thinness, of trapezoid shape, the cutting edge very gently curved and marked with a subtle beveled edge, the blade drilled with five apertures along the upper edge, the translucent stone of a richly mottled pale-brown and light greenish-white color with dark hair-like specks and small areas of creamy-white calcification.

Provenance: The Essex Collection of Chinese Art. An old collector’s label applied to the lower edge, inscribed ‘C6. Chinese Jade Axe. 100 BC. 16x57’. Dr. Ben Essex is a noted English collector of ancient Chinese works of art. He inherited an impressive collection from his grandfather Max Lowenson and has been expanding it with great verve and passion for decades. Today, pieces from Dr. Essex's collection are housed in the National Museum of Wales.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, minor signs of weathering and erosion, minor nibbles and old chips to edges which have smoothened over time, few minuscule nicks.

Expert’s note: Jessica Rawson in Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing, British Museum, 1995, pages 184, discusses jade ceremonial blades of the neolithic period and how they evolved from stone reaping implements.
