Jade tablets or handles such as the present lot are likely to have served as lingpai or ancestral insignia during the early Shang to Western Zhou periods, when jade continued to be used in the creation of ritualistic objects, in particular tokens of rank and symbolic aids for the celestial journey thought to be undertaken by the dead.
