Description

? A LARGE CELADON AND RUSSET JADE FIGURE OF A BUFFALO, WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTY

Expert authentication: Dr. Gu Fang has examined the present lot and confirms its authenticity and the dating above, noting the style of cutting, workmanship, thickness and quality of stone with decomposed areas indicating burial all suggest a dating to 1066-771 BC. He assessed it as a piece of notably good quality. A signed copy of Dr. Gu's expertise, dated 8 March 2006, accompanies this lot.
Dr. Gu Fang (born 1962) is an internationally renowned scholar of Chinese art and a leading authority on jades. He graduated from the Department of Archaeology at the prestigious Beijing University in 1986 and later studied at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), where he now serves as a Senior Fellow specializing in archaeological excavations and Chinese jade research. A former visiting scholar at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, he has authored several books on Chinese jades, including the 15-volume The Complete Collection of Jades Unearthed in China (2007), one of the most comprehensive studies of its kind, as well as Chinese Jade: The Spiritual and Cultural Significance of Jade in China (2012).

China, 1066-771 BC. Boldly carved in the round as a large water buffalo lying placidly in a recumbent pose with the four legs tucked in underneath and the head slightly turned to the left. Richly decorated with double-line grooves, the head with large eyes and curved horns, the body with scrolling fur. The semi-translucent stone of a pale green tone with russet shadings and veins as well as dark specks and striations.

Provenance: From a private collection in New York.
Condition: Very good condition with ancient wear, minor signs of weathering and erosion, small nicks, and old chips to exposed areas. The stone with natural fissures, some of which have developed into small hairline cracks.

Weight: 1,517 g
Dimensions: Height 5.5 cm, Length 16.7 cm

With a modern padded storage box. (2)

Expert’s note: One of the innovations of Shang to Western Zhou dynasties jade carving was the creation of figures in the round. The artist further ornamented this water buffalo with spirals that recall bronze decorative motifs, creating the illusion of these patterns being raised by engraving the surface with two slightly beveled parallel lines.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related pale celadon jade figure of a recumbent water buffalo, dated to the Shang dynasty, ca. 1600-1046 BC, 6.5 cm long, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 1976.297.2.
