Description

A SUPERB SAPPHIRE BLUE OVERLAY GLASS ‘ELEPHANT’ BOTTLE VASE, PROBABLY IMPERIAL, 1750-1850

China, Beijing. The body of ovoid form in shape of a caparisoned elephant, tapering towards the base which is supported on four feet, and surmounted by a splayed neck symbolizing a vase. The vase is carved through the sapphire blue layer to the semi-translucent, bubble-suffused ‘snowflake’ ground to depict the elephant’s head turned to the left, the saddlecloth meticulously incised with waves and scrolling clouds within geometric borders, and terminating in a fringe. The neck engraved with the letters daji and heping (Luck and peace) on a brocade ground tied with a sash, above a band of ruyi.

Provenance: From the private collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, New York. Alan Hartman (1930-2023) was an influential American art dealer, who took over his parents’ antique business in Manhattan and established the legendary Rare Art Gallery on Madison Avenue, with further locations in Dallas and Palm Beach. His wife Simone (née Horowitz) already served as assistant manager of the New York gallery before the couple married in 1975, and together they built a renowned collection for over half a century and became noted art patrons, enriching the collections of important museums including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (which opened the Alan and Simone Hartman Galleries in 2013) as well as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Brooklyn Museum in New York. Alan Hartman has been described as the greatest antiques dealer of our generation, and was widely recognized as a world authority in Chinese jade, bronzes, and Asian works of art.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and manufacturing irregularities, few shallow chips to the elephant’s tusks.

Weight: 292.3 g
Dimensions: Height 11.8 cm

Caparisoned elephants were a favored motif in Qing imperial art: The elephant carrying a vase provides the homonym for ‘peace and prosperity’. While this design commonly appears on nephrite and yellow glass snuff bottles, examples of vases rendered in cobalt-blue glass are exceptionally rare.
