Imbued with utmost spirituality and dynamism, these figures showcase the outstanding workmanship of Fujian lacquer craftsmen. They depict two of the Eight Immortals in the Daoist pantheon, Lu Dongbin and Zhongli Quan.

Lu Dongbin is one of the most widely known of the Eight Immortals and often acts as their leader. He is a legendary scholar and poet said to have lived during the Tang dynasty and whose lifetime supposedly spanned two hundred and twenty years. He is considered one of the earliest masters of neidan, or internal alchemy. In Chinese art, Lu Dongbin is generally depicted dressed as a scholar carrying a sword that dispels evil spirits.

Zhongli Quan, whose magical fan can resurrect the dead and transform stones into silver or gold, is said to have been born in the Han dynasty. Following his father's example, he became a member of the court, advancing to be general of one of the armies of the Han dynasty. In his last battle, he was forced to flee into the mountains where he came across an old man who led him to a spiritual sanctuary, where he learned the ways of the immortal rituals and alchemy. After three hard days of teaching, he was dismissed and told to use his newfound powers to serve his people. When he turned back to talk to the man, he and his home had vanished. Using his power of alchemy and his magical fan, he created silver and gold coins from stones and saved people from poverty and famine.
