The album depicts battle formations that the army in ancient China arranged according to the terrain conditions, the strength of the two parties and other specific circumstances when entering a battle, ranging from a column to the entire army.

According to legend, the Yellow Emperor invented military formations. Chinese formations were first mentioned in literature in the Chunqiu (Spring and Autumn Annals). Zuo Zhuan reports that Duke Zhuang of Zheng introduced a new offensive formation - the Yuli formation - to the Zheng army in the fifth year of Duke Huan of Lu (707 BC). The emergence of the Yuli formation was the beginning for military formations in ancient Chinese warfare.
