Description

A MOTTLED DARK GREEN AND BLACK JADE ‘TIGER’ PENDANT, WARRING STATES TO WESTERN HAN DYNASTY

China, 5th-3rd century BC. Of flattened form, finely carved and pierced in the form of a crouching tiger in profile, its back slightly arched and the tail curled, the beast bearing a ferocious expression with the mouth wide open in a loud roar. The body neatly incised with stripes and decorated with comma spirals centered by a small aperture for suspension as a pendant. The opaque stone bearing dark greenish hues with black specks and veining.

Provenance: A private estate in Switzerland. Auktionshaus B?diger, Bonn, Germany, 1997. A private collection in Northrhine-Westphalia, Germany, acquired from the above and thence by descent.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age, signs of weathering and erosion, small chips and nibbles which have smoothened over time, minor losses, small areas of calcification, encrustations.

Weight: 81.9 g
Dimensions: Length 14.3 cm

In the Zhou dynasty the number of jades in burial sites increased significantly, as multiple plaques and beads were sewn or strung together and draped over the face and body of the deceased. Jades in the forms of figures and animals became increasingly realistic, and surface patterns became more complex and highly decorative.

Expert’s note:
The present lot relates closely to an example that is part of a complete pendant buried for the Nanyue King Zhao Mo (r. 137 BC-122 BC), illustrated for example by Jessica Rawson, Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing, p. 72. Zhao Mo’s tomb was discovered in downtown Guangzhou in 1983, and the Museum of the Western Han Dynasty Mausoleum of the Nanyue King housing the tomb opened in 1988.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related jade tiger dated to the Warring States period, 3rd century BC, 19.1 cm long, in the Harvard Art Museums, accession number 1943.50.469.B.
