Description

A CELADON AND RUSSET JADE SCHOLAR’S ROCK, 17TH-18TH CENTURY

China. Carved and pierced naturalistically as a scholar’s rock of irregular form with an overhang evocative of a majestic eagle perched on a craggy outcrop. The perforated stone of a deep celadon tone with russet patches and veins as well as areas of cloudy inclusions.

Provenance: From the private collection of Douglas Bucher, New York. Douglas Gregg Bucher (1947-2023) was an architect who specialized in the restoration of historic buildings. He developed a passion for art history and began collecting Chinese jades and porcelain in the 1980s. He served on the board of the Hart Cluett Museum in Troy, New York.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and natural imperfections like fissures which may have developed into hairlines.

Weight: 1,236.3 g (excl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 14.7 cm (excl. stand)

“Like a landscape painting, the rock represented a microcosm of the universe on which the scholar could meditate within the confines of his studio or garden,” writes Robert D. Mowry. “Although most scholar’s rocks suggest mountain landscapes, these abstract forms may recall a variety of images to the viewer, such as dragons, phoenixes, blossoming plants and even human figures.” A few of the mountainscapes may recall specific peaks but most represent imaginary mountains such as the isles of the immortals believed to rise in the eastern sea. However, more than anything it was the abstract qualities that appealed to the Chinese literati, an idea that resonates with the modern collector who will see parallels with the avant-garde forms of Brancusi, Giacometti, and Henry Moore.
