Description

A BONE AND SILVER-MOUNTED CEREMONIAL DAGGER, DUGHTI, LATE 19TH-EARLY 20TH CENTURY

Himalayan regions, Tibet or Bhutan. The steel blade with scroll designs neatly inlaid in copper. The bone and silver handle with bronze beading along the edges. The silver portion of the handle is decorated with a kirtimukha mask. The silver sheath intricately decorated to each side with three cartouches, one enclosing a sinuous dragon, flanked by the other two with tigers, each amid foliage, framed by bands of key-fret, the reverse fitted with a loop.

Provenance: From an old private collection in Vienna and thence by descent.
Condition: Very good condition with small losses to the edges, minor wear, light scratches, the bone with fine natural fissures, the blade with expected corrosion.
