Description

A SILVER FIGURE OF SYAMATARA, QING DYNASTY, 18TH-19TH CENTURY

Expert’s note: The use of silver, a rare precious metal in Himalayan production, coupled with its relatively large size and quite hefty weight, establishes the present figure as a rather important commission.

Tibetan-Chinese. Finely cast seated in lalitasana on an elaborate double-lotus pedestal framed by a beaded upper edge. The deity’s right foot resting on a separate padma issuing from the base, her right hand lowered in varada mudra, and her left hand raised in prithvi mudra before her chest. She is dressed in a loose-fitting dhoti and shawl with finely carved folds gathered at the feet and adorned with a foliate design.

Her serene face with sinuously lidded downcast eyes, gently arched brows, and full bow-shaped lips forming a calm smile. The hair tied into a high chignon topped by a jewel behind the foliate crown, with finely incised strands of hair elegantly falling over her shoulders and back. The base sealed.

Provenance: European private collection.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities, expected minor tarnish, few minute nicks and small surface scratches. The sealing plate is possibly a later replacement.

Weight: 1,734 g
Dimensions: Height 17 cm
